PREPARATION OF IMPROVISED TEACHING AIDS
Improvisation is the act of creating something or using something in absence of the ideal tools, science teacher often try to teach students about scientific principles through the use of laboratory experiments, though they do not always have access to the resources needed to optimally perform the experiments
Improvised materials are, materials that are used in the absence of the real , original or delicate objects to bring about the same learning effect that the real or complicated materials would have brought. This materials can be invented or produced from readily available materials within the environment.Hence the improvised teaching aids are necessary to enable students acquire better knowledge and skills and promote better understanding of the concept
Improvised materials provide a cognitive bridge between abstraction and reality to students. Improvisation saves cost and in addition the teacher and the students makes positive effort towards effective instruction
Teaching aids are important because they create a visual and interactive experience for the students as the students become more engaged they are more likely to understand the topic being taught .The main factor in the effect use of teaching aids is that skilled teacher is behind the tools being used the teacher is the richest teaching aid source because they play a lot of roles in the class to design the effect low cost teaching aid , the teacher should have through knowledge of the objectives and science concepts.
As the part of teacher training course our college of education conduced a workshop on preparation of improvised teaching aids such as charts and models . I selected the theme for improvised chart as propagation of light through convex and concave lens and zodiac . The theme for improvised models were Barton's pendulum and model of Chandhrayan2 moon mission.The instructions for the preparation of charts and models were provided by the teacher educator .Low cost materials are used for the preparation of improvised aid such as rubber balls, paper pieces, chart papers and card board. The teaching aids are prepared easily with little or no money to make learning effective, comprehensive and fascinating.
The still model of Chandhrayan 2 could explain different stages of the satellite.
Improvised chart could explain the light passes through convex and concave lens by convergence and divergence.
Chart 2 explain the trajectory along which the sun appears to move ,and the zodiac behind each solar eclipse.
The practical work of participation in the preparation of improvised teaching aid was very helpful to make awareness on utilization of local resources to prepare low cost teaching aids. Scientific principles can be taught more effectively with the use of improvised teaching aids with creating interest in learning. If the science concept are taught with the help of improvised teaching aids, children remember these concepts for a long time and the classroom interaction becomes meaningful.
